According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, the GaAs foundry market was worth $311 million in 2008, growing 27% year-on-year. Win Semiconductors is the largest pure-play GaAs foundry, pushing TriQuint hard for the number one spot in 2008 with only one percentage point separating the two companies in overall market share.  GaAs foundries will continue to benefit from trends in the GaAs industry, favoring dual-sourcing and fabless strategies. “Cheap silicon” in the economic downturn may be proving too expensive for start-up companies targeting niche and emerging markets. This offers an additional opportunity for GaAs foundries provided they aggressively promote the lower costs and higher performance capabilities offered by GaAs processes.
